NEWS: black midi Release New Single, "Cruising"
“'Cavalcade' is the work of a band that’s determined to defy all routines, including its own.” — The New York Times “On [‘Cavalcade’], they hold onto their reputation for aggression and complexity, while adding melody and a whole new emotional dimension.” — Vanity Fair “[Cavalcade] is even more unnerving and gloriously surreal — like gazing into hell through a kaleidoscope.” — Rolling Stone (“The Best Albums of 2021 So Far”) “It’s a record that sounds almost nothing like the modern world, which of course is the point. Black Midi is its own world.” — Uproxx
black midi’s Cavalcade, released this spring via Rough Trade, is “an avant-rock labyrinth of maddening intricacy” (Pitchfork). Landing on multiple “Best Albums of 2021 (So Far)” lists, it remains one of the year’s most praised releases by critics and fans alike. Today, they present a new single, “Cruising,” previously only available as a bonus track on the Japanese Cavalcade CD release. Taken from the same sessions as Cavalcade, “Cruising” was recorded with John Spud Murphy. It slows the pace down with great dynamism, as muted percussion and softly thrumming bass and guitar open the track. As it continues, Greep’s ominous voice hovers in and the instrumentation grows more melancholy and tense. Like Cavalcade, “Cruising” champions black midi’s astounding musicianship.
