Adulthood arrives on the back of riffs, beats and warped grooves for prodigious songwriter-producer, Ed Fisher as he shrouds himself in his alter-ego of Urbanparcs on his 18th birthday, releasing the peppy, heat-haze alt-pop of Hayfever to blow out the candles to. His fifth single and the first to be released by Tri-Tone Music, Fisher once again wraps up DIY ideals in crystal-cut pop technique, giving dancers the chance to dance and the loafers a wall-of-sound to loaf against.
Sandwiched between cities in the hinterlands of the North West of England, Urbanparcs is a product of youthful endeavour, striking out to create fresh noise in earshot of classic albums, the past informing the present to shape the future. Fisher’s intensely creative inner-sanctum of one is reminiscent of Tame Impala and Alfie Templeman, casually mining a whole world of music at the digitised, home-studio coalface. Hayfever follows previous singles including the electro-Arctic Monkeys groove of Fire and 80’s-inspired confessional, Show Me Love.
Hayfever, departing on sunlit strumming and winding its way through the jangle-meets-beats terrain of artists like Beabadoobee, Mac DeMarco or Beach House is arguably Fishers’ most complete gem to date. If great music is about what you leave out as much as what you put in, Hayfever’s guitar breaks, peaks of synth-driven melody, music box interludes and pools of single-instrument pause show an artist in total and assured control of his multi-mood songcraft.
The currently Liverpool-based multi-instrumentalist (taking on the theoretical at Liverpool Institute Of Performing Arts), Urbanparcs’ insular, lab-technician approach to pop design, taking cues from Prince and Bowie in how to construct both sound and persona, also extends to the stage. Celebrating the release of Hayfever and shaping more of the future’s plans, Fisher emerges to perform on the following stages:
Mon 18 October 2021 – Liverpool, Kazimier Stockroom
Wed 24 November 2021 - Liverpool, Cavern with BBC Introducing
